The identity rights and responsibilities project was a project carried out by Plan UK and Gemin-i.org. The success of the Young People’s Commission for Africa in engaging young people in learning and offering a space for young people to air their views inspired this project.

"I'm a dude, I'm a chizboy, I'm a cherry, I'm a coloured. I'm beautiful, I'm handsome, I'm gorgeous, I'm black. Because I AM WHATEVER I SAY I AM”

The project linked 25 schools in the UK with 23 schools in Africa and a youth group in the Philippines from January until the summer of 2006. The groups worked collaboratively exploring the concept of identity in relation to rights and responsibilities. The groups explored these topics in the classroom and online through e-mail discussion forums and chat rooms. The groups then chose extension topics which were explored in greater depth. Extension topics chosen included natural disasters, children and armed conflict and birth registration. The work produced ranged from videos and plays to manifestos and newspaper articles.

The project was designed to promote global citizenship and fits in with a number of curriculum areas including English, Geography, Citizenship and ICT. To view the work the students produced click on the ‘Our Work’ tab above. If you would like to see the whole web site click on the ‘Launch Project’.

In the Teacher Resources section there are downloadable resources and lesson plans for schools that want to explore these topics. There is also an interactive map of Africa, UK and the Philippines with downloadable country profiles. We would also recommend that you have a look at the Hot Seats section which contains interviews with politicians, celebrities and experts who were interviewed using questions prepared by the project participants.
